CHANDIGARH: There is hope for some good news for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the newborn gharials at Chhatbir zoo.
These 16 amphibians born on June 15, would be put on public display on July 15. At present, the reptiles have been kept under medical supervision round the clock.
Officials are making all steps to ensure these endangered species are protected.
The temperature in the gharials' enclosure is being maintained at 26 degrees celsius and high voltage bulbs have been installed to keep the bay warm. The young gharials also feed on insects that buzz around the bulbs at night.
Zoo director Basanta Rajkumar said, ''The amphibians have been kept away from their parents. It is a known fact that the elder gharials can at times feed on their offspring.''
