Was Kohli blackmailing his employer's kin?

CHANDIGARH: His UK employer's son-in-law had lent the suspected killer of Hannah Foster 16,000 pounds for no apparent reason.
Was Kohli blackmailing his employer's kin?
CHANDIGARH: In UK police records, Maninderpal Singh Kohli, suspected killer of schoolgirl Hannah Foster, is stated to be a "persistent borrower, gambler and heavy drinker." The question baffling investigators at this stage, therefore, is who funded him during the 15 months he was on the run?
Operation Springfield, launched by the UK police to trace Kohli, tended towards the view that his relatives in Mohali and elsewhere were supporting him.

Punjab Police, however, did not agree with their UK counterparts and suggested that Kohli was being funded by James Dennis, son-in-law of the owner of Hazzleworld Food, where Kohli worked for a year.
A UK police report prepared by detective Gary Plat also says that Dennis had recklessly lent money to Kohli — in all about 16,000 pounds — without any clear purpose. Plat concludes that "both of them could be partners on sex angles."
Another point that supports this theory is that during his stay in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, Kohli had adopted the pseudonym Mike Dennis, similar to James Dennis. As such, the police do not rule out Kohli''s being in constant touch with James.
After fleeing the UK on March 18 on the pretext of visiting his ailing mother, Kohli had reached his brother''s place in Mohali. He stayed there till March 28, when his father-in-law Didar Singh called up from Southampton to inform him that the UK police were looking for him in the Hannah Foster case. Thereafter, Kohli left the Mohali house telling his brother that he was returning to the UK.
Instead, he moved to Bangalore and reportedly lost touch with his relatives in Mohali and the UK. After spending around six months in Bangalore he moved on to Mysore and then Varanasi.
Police say from Varanasi Kohli proceeded to Darjeeling, where he adopted the name Mike Dennis and led a lavish life at a hotel for about two months, before moving to Kalimpong.
