JALANDHAR: When thousands of rural folks of Punjab volunteered to help those marooned during floods and then to plug the breaches in Sultanpur Lodhi area, an American origin Sikh has come to do sewa in Punjab "to help the community which rushes to help others."
Gurmeet Singh (36) whose parents embraced Sikhism under influence of Yogi Harbhajan Singh, has been working to plug the breaches for the last four-five days while accompanying Baba Sukha Singh of Sarhali, Amritsar in villages Baupur, Ahli Kalan, both in Sultanpur Lodhi. Baba Sukha Singh has been leading plugging work at these places with his volunteers and local rural folks.
"I was in Malaysia and came here to contribute to help the Punjabi Sikhs when they need it. They have been rushing to help others during any type of disaster without any discrimination. I had a very strong feeling that when they are passing through a disaster and need help I should be here to serve them,” said Gurmeet Snigh while speaking to TOI.
"A lot of people came out in Punjab to help others who were marooned and extended all type of help. I thought I should be here during this time,” he said. He has been doing whatever volunteer work is required while joining other rural folks.
Gumeet told that his parents admitted him in Miri Piri Academy at Amritsar and he completed his school education there from around 1994 to 2004 and then returned to US to attend college. "I also learned playing Tabla while at Amritsar," he said.
Stating that he was in family business in Boston, Gumeet said that he was born to Sikh parents Kartar Singh and Satmandar Kaur who had become Sikhs under influence of Yogi Harbhajan Singh.
