Chandigarh: Coming out in support of the uniform civil code,
Kerala governor Arif Mohammad Khan asserted that a wrong narrative is being built that it will cause intrusion in religious practices.
Speaking at the All-Indian Minority Conclave in Chandigarh, Khan maintained that uniform civil code’s constitutional objective is to deliver uniform justice that is
common for all the communities.
“The provisions of uniform civil code offer equal justice to women belonging to different communities - whether they are matrimonial disputes, or inheritance or property disputes. Women in our country have been subjected to injustice due to different definitions of personal laws adopted by different communities. So there is a need to bring an uniform law which has same provisions for all the communities,” he added.
Speaking about diverse cultural society in India, the Kerala governor said, “The beauty of the Indian democracy is the vast diversity in terms of culture, caste and religion that it has, and yet it is one country with one vision.” He added, “We have to connect our youth with our traditions and heritage as all the Indian civilisations have taught us very rich values with a message of universal brotherhood and communal harmony.” Iqbal Singh Lalpura, chairman, National Commission for Minorities, said, “Today is an important day as we celebrate National Mother Language Day and we are holding this All-India Minority Conclave. All the communities have made equal contributions to the nation’s development.”
