Two arrested in digital arrest scam: Rs 1.65 lakh cash and 3 mobile phones recovered by Ambala cyber police
AMBALA: The Ambala Cyber Crime police arrested two accused individuals and recovered Rs 1.65 lakh in cash along with three mobile phones in a digital arrest scam. The arrests were made under the guidance of Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat, as part of a larger crackdown on cybercrime and absconding criminals.
On May 9, 2025, the Cyber Crime police arrested Piyush Gupta, a resident of Professor Colony, Yamunanagar, and Lovkesh, a resident of Tyagi Garden, Yamunanagar. Both were taken into custody and remanded to police custody for three days, as per court orders. During interrogation, authorities recovered Rs 1.65 lakh in cash and three mobile phones from the suspects. Additionally, Rs 2 lakh in the suspects’ bank accounts were frozen.
Police investigations revealed that the accused were conducting financial transactions with the mastermind of the scam via the Biggo application. So far, a total of 13 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, and approximately Rs 27 lakh has been recovered. Authorities have also frozen around Rs 17 lakh in various bank accounts.
The scam has broader implications, with nearly 90 online complaints against the suspects registered in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Goa.
Both arrested individuals have now been sent to judicial custody as per court directives.
The case originated from a complaint filed by Rajendra Kumar, a resident of Palam Vihar, Ambala, on April 6, 2025. He reported that between March 29 and April 5, 2025, he was defrauded of a large sum by unidentified individuals who sent him a fake police arrest warrant and coerced him under the pretext of a so-called “digital arrest.”
Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat has urged the public to stay vigilant and spread awareness about cybercrime. He advised citizens to report any instances of cyber fraud immediately by calling the helpline number 1930.
