According to police, around 10.30 pm, the trio opened fire inside Waryam Singh Hospital, discharging over 10 rounds. Soon after, they fired three to four rounds at the entrance of the City Mall before fleeing.
Around 5 am, police received inputs about suspicious movement near the Kansapur–Ansal Sushant City area. When a police team attempted to stop the suspects, they allegedly opened fire at the police party, leading to an encounter, police said. Several rounds were fired from both sides.
During the exchange, two accused sustained bullet injuries, while the third was injured after falling from a motorcycle in an attempt to flee.
All three were overpowered and shifted to a local hospital. Police also recovered firearms from them.
A case was registered at Farakpur police station under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 111(4) (organised crime), 121(1) (causing hurt to deter a public servant), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant), and 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
According to the FIR, preliminary inspection indicated the involvement of the Kala Rana and Noni Rana gang. Police said the owner of Waryam Singh Hospital earlier received extortion and threat calls from the gang.
Sub-inspector Rakesh said gangster Noni Rana, whose brother Kala Rana is currently lodged in jail, operated the gang from abroad along with associates Anil alias Monu Gujjar, Ankit Giri, Shubham Pandit, and others, and was allegedly involved in multiple cases of murder, extortion, and attempt to murder.
Yamunanagar SP Kamal Deep Goyal said the case appeared to be linked to extortion and creating fear. He added that the accused's gang connections would be established after further interrogation. He said no policeman was injured in the encounter. The SP said during initial questioning, not much criminal background of the arrested accused came to light, which showed that the criminals were luring youth.
Police said further investigation was underway to trace the accused's wider criminal network and gang links.
