Traders flag civic lapses, allege encroachment and poor sanitation in Mohali mkts

Mohali: The Mohali Beopar Mandal has raised serious concerns over what it termed civic mismanagement and uneven enforcement by the MC, pointing to persistent issues of encroachment, unregulated parking and delayed waste clearance in key market areas.Led by its president, Sarabjit Singh Paras, the traders' body Thursday alleged that street vendors continued to occupy designated parking spaces with little intervention from the MC. This, they said, reduced parking availability for customers, hurt business and led to frequent congestion around commercial hubs.
"We pressed the MC to remove all hindrances created by various elements from market parking areas, but the corporation failed to act effectively," Paras said. "Vendors are occupying parking lots with impunity, causing inconvenience to visitors as well as shopkeepers," he added.The association also flagged another concern — vehicles left for repair being parked behind showrooms for long periods. These, they claimed, blocked service lanes and emergency access routes, posing safety risks and further squeezing already limited space.The Beopar Mandal criticised the absence of proper parking demarcation, saying the lack of clear markings led to haphazard parking, congestion and disputes.Sanitation delays were also highlighted. Shopkeepers said rubbish was often cleared late in the morning, sometimes after 11am, by which time markets were open. "Cleaning should be completed early in the morning, preferably before 10am, to maintain hygiene and provide a positive environment for shoppers," Paras added.The traders' body urged the MC to act promptly, warning that continued inaction could hurt commercial activity and damage the market's reputation.
