Panchkula: Following TOI’s report, “HSVP drive under fire as govt encroachments go unchecked”, the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) carried out its first demolition exercise outside its own building. Using a JCB and a tractor trolley, the authority razed structures as part of its ongoing anti-encroachment campaign. In a striking case of encroachment, HSVP had erected a structure with a large nameplate, fenced off the road berm, and developed a green patch, obstructing pedestrian and visitor movement.HSVP’s Panchkula Estate Officer (EO) Surender Lather, who recently assumed charge, said: “Taking note of TOI’s report, we have removed the encroachment on the road berm outside our office. We will also act against other departments that have engaged in violations. Our campaign is equal for all. We are carrying it out in an unbiased and fair manner as per the directions of the high court.”The move to “set their own house in order” came as a pleasant surprise to residents.“It was not expected. Hope the entire exercise across the city is conducted in a similar manner, without any bias,” said one resident.Last week, TOI highlighted how HSVP, while issuing notices for violations, had itself created a major encroachment. The report also pointed to similar violations by the municipal corporation, power department, Sinchai Bhawan, and administrative and police offices. So far, HSVP has issued more than 1,500 notices to residents for encroachments on road berms. This followed Lather’s directive to officials to survey properties and identify violations. Notices are now being issued in phases, warning residents to clear encroachments or face removal by HSVP.Many residents have begun compliance, dismantling iron grills, meshes, boundary hedges, and greenery outside their homes. However, concerns remain that these cleared spaces could turn into garbage dumping sites or become messy if not maintained properly by HSVP.
