CHANDIGARH: A local court on Wednesday convicted three men of snatching Rs 1.10 crore from a city-based jeweller at the rear of Sector 17 bus stand in November 2014 and sentenced them to 10-year jail term.
Sikander Rehman alias Denny, Jimmy Bansal and Rahul Bagiyal, all residents of Burail, were arrested while trying to leave the city from near the Sector 17 bus stand in December 2014.
As many as 30 hearings took place in the case.
Defence lawyer Gagan Aggarwal said, "We are a bit disappointed with the verdict. We will now move the higher court. Many aspects of the case are unheard and yet to be explored."
On the night of November 1, 2014, Sameer Jain, a resident of Sector 48, was dropped near the fire brigade station by his nephew Tushar. He was going to catch a bus for New Delhi when the accused struck. Two of them hit him on his head with a blunt weapon, while the third snatched his bag containing the cash. A police control room (PCR) Gypsy found him lying in a pool of blood and he was rushed to Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16.
Sikandar, the main accused, had hatched the plan after tracking the movements of Jain, who ran his shop in Sector 23.
On December 1, 2014, the accused were arrested and Rs 89 lakh was recovered from them. They had spent the robbed cash on expensive items. Rahul had spent Rs 10 lakh on his brother's marriage, while Jimmy was seen donating a large sum of money to a beggar, police had said.
