Panjab University has handed over to police a case of bungling relating to sale of forms.
CHANDIGARH: While Panjab University has handed over to police a case of bungling relating to sale of forms, two other scams-- bungling in sale of gazettes and embezzlement in fee depositing--need to be investigated. This, despite the fact that the senate had decided that a comprehensive inquiry should be conducted in all such cases. Modus operandi in both these scams is similar to the one in the sale of forms, which is now being investigated by the economic offences wing of UT police.
Sources say some instances of fee-depositing scam have already been reported to vice-chancellor Prof KN Pathak. ToC is in possession of receipts which have the same number but the amount written is different.
An internal inquiry into the sale of gazettes is already complete, and the fraud is reported to be over Rs 3 lakh. But instead of handing over the case to the police, the university has appointed a chartered accountant to look into the matter, add sources. Interestingly, the book sellers who played foul in the case concerning sale of forms have also allegedly connived in the fraud related to sale of gazettes. Those involved in the scam seemed to have broken into the security measures adopted by the university after the detection of fraud in the sale of forms by putting receipt numbers and writing the amount in words on vouchers. Meanwhile, PU is yet to provide related records to the investigating agency in the form-sale scam. The university had put the onus of giving the record on some employees but they claim that they do not have it as they had submitted it to their seniors during internal inquiry.
