Ludhiana: PAU students, former students and NGOs expressed their opposition to the opening of a liquor vend opposite the university by setting up a makeshift bookstall called ‘Theka Kitab’, which was set up in front of ‘Theka sharab’ on Monday.
The “theka kitab” operates for two hours in the evening. One of the protesters, Dr Amandeep Bains said PAU authorities should have taken action.
“Authorities are turning a blind eye towards this callous act. According to norms, such liquor vends should not be set up near educational institutions.”
Ravneet Singh from Eco Sikh Foundation said on the one hand, the government wants people to stay away from drugs and on the other, it has allowed a liquor vend to function outside the university.
Ramit Saxena , from a blood donation foundation, Friends For Life said foreign delegates visit the university and girl students have to wait for bus and auto-rickshaw in in front of Gate no 2, where the vend is located.
Jaspreet Singh of PAU Young Writers’ Association said they have not submitted any memorandum or complaint but will wait for authorities to take action.
