: The district last year saw an 80% rise in tenant verification as compared to 2018. If official data were to be believed, as many as 49,542 property owners got their tenants verified at various Saanjh Kendras across the district. In 2018, this number was only 27,479.

“We verify people who live in rented accommodations and as paying guests at a minimal cost of Rs 50 to Rs 100,” said an official of Saanjh Kendra, requesting anonymity. It is not surprising that the year witnessed an increase in the verifications. The much-needed spur was given by the then SSP of Mohali Harcharan Singh Bhullar.

In one of his several drives, Bhullar on July 7, 2019 booked 60 property owners for keeping tenants without verification.

This triggered the process and as many as 12,542 verifications were done in July alone. In August, the number, however, fell to half at 6,565 verifications.

Superintendent of police (investigation) Harmandeep Singh Hans said, “Generating awareness played a key role in the rise of the verification. Regular check needs to be conducted by officials to maintain this pace.”

Kuljeet Singh Bedi, a local councillor, said, “Still there are many property owners who have kept unverified tenants. More drives should be conducted by the police as PG accommodations here have become a hub for criminals.”
