Jind: Despite several rounds of talks, the stalemate between the district administration and farmers continued for the third day in Jind district on Tuesday. On Tuesday, a committee of farmers led by Gurnam Singh Charuni held discussions with district officials, including ADC Sahil Gupta, ASP Kuldeep Singh and SDM Rajesh Khoth, for three hours in Narwana town but no agreement could be reached.
Three days ago, when district authorities reached Badanpur village to take possession of an eight-acre plot in which paddy was planted, two farmers consumed poison at the spot, following which one of them, Inder (70), died. Possession action was stopped after the incident, with the farmers claiming that they have been sowing crops in this field for years.
After the incident, farmers have been protesting at Baddowal toll plaza with the body. Several farmer leaders, including Gurnam Singh Charuni, Azad Palwan and Phool Singh Sheokand, have extended support to the stir. “District authorities should handover the land to farmers as they had possession for years. If the administration and Haryana government fail to transfer the land, a major agitation would be launched," said Charuni. Protesters are demanding a job for a family member of the deceased farmer, along with Rs 60 lakh compensation.
Rajesh Khoth, SDM, said the land could not be transferred to farmers as it has been earmarked “common land.”
