Take 2nd road to New Chandigarh from May

Chandigarh: In a month’s time, the city will have a new 1.5km road link with New Chandigarh — the works on since 2019 will finally be completed by May.
The road will directly connect Dakshin Marg to PR4 road in New Chandigarh. Currently, New Chandigarh has only one direct link — the road from Madhya Marg.

Currently, commuters have to go through Sarangpur via Madhya Marg to reach New Chandigarh.
The UT engineering department is constructing the road. “The ground work has been completed and next laying of bitumen will start. We expect the road to become full operational by April-end or May,” said an official.
The work was allotted and a wet mix laid, when in October 2020 the construction was stopped. Punjab has already completed the construction till the connectivity point of the land falling in their jurisdiction.
The administration took over possession of 17.76 acre land for the new road on the UT-Punjab boundary in August 2020. A total of Rs 74.67 crore compensation amount was decided.
The petition, on which a stay was granted by the Punjab and Haryana high court on the construction of the road, was withdrawn on November 21, 2022.
The petitioners in 2019 had challenged the social impact assessment report of the committee and obtained status quo order on October 5, 2020, although not on merits. It had been observed by the bench during the course of arguments that on one ground or the other, the adjournments were sought after status quo order.
The bench observed that of the total acquired land of 18 acres, 5.57 acres for Dhanas and 12.23 acres for Dadumajra, the possession has already been taken by the UT administration. Out of 89 petitioners, majority had either received compensation or filed reference for enhancement of compensation.
