Stopped from drinking in public, 5 assault SHO in Mohali

Mohali: Mohali police have arrested five suspects for allegedly attacking the station house officer (SHO) of Sohana police station. It is reported that the SHO was attacked while trying to stop the accused from drinking alcohol in public. The attackers even tore his uniform.The accused were identified as Rahul Arora from Sector-105, Harpal Singh from Kharar, Arun Deep from Phase-1, Sahil Arora from Sector 99, and another individual. A case was registered against them at the Sohana police station under Sections 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions) and 132 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty) of the Indian Penal Code, based on the statement of inspector Simran Singh.The accused were presented in the Mohali district court on Monday, which sent them to judicial custody. However, one accused is still at large, and efforts are underway to apprehend him.In his police complaint, inspector Simran Singh said while on patrol duty in his area, he saw a group of people drinking alcohol in front of a prominent restaurant in Sector-79 market. When the SHO approached them and informed them that drinking in public places is prohibited, the accused, who were intoxicated, allegedly began to abuse him.When inspector Simran tried to stop them, they started to scuffle with him, allegedly tearing his uniform. The SHO called for police backup, and the individuals were arrested and taken to the Sohana police station. A case was registered against all of them at the Sohana police station. When asked why a case for drinking alcohol in a public place was not filed, a police officer explained that when others were stopped from drinking, they also began to quarrel with the police, and the arrested accused came to their aid.
