CHANDIGARH: Dumps of garbage on vacated land near highway-73, Sector 23 Panchkula has added to the woes of residents and has become a health hazard.
Satpal Yadav from Government Model Senior Secondary School said, “The land is being used as a dumping ground by MC and HUDA. Garbage trucks are utilizing the land recklessly for over 10 years. He added that the stench heaps have made the area prone to diseases, especially during monsoon and MC officials have failed to get the area cleaned up. Anita Desai, a resident of sector 25 said, “Trash from the entire city is dumped here and authorities have paid no heed to our complaints. Our humble requests to the concerned authorities have been taken for granted.”
President of Sector 25, Panchkula, Sant Singh Gill said, “During the recent survey report on sanitation conditions based on Ministry of Urban Development, Chandigarh was ranked number one, followed by Mohali at number 28 and Panchkula at 255. It is shameful to witness such run down conditions in a city of repute”.
Executive officer, MC, K K Jain said, “A committee had been formulated on July 19 to deal with the issue. We are searching for a new garbage dumping ground.” DC Asima Garg added that the issue would be resolved in a short span of time and the newly formed committee is looking into the matter.
