Spurt in farm fires across Punjab and Haryana
Bathinda: The crop residue burning cases continued to rise in Punjab and Haryana, with the two states recording 661 incidents on Sunday.Punjab reported 417 crop residue burning cases, pushing the cumulative total in the state so far this season to 2,820. In the last seven days, Punjab registered 2,551 cases.Sangrur remained the worst-affected district with a maximum 396 crop residue burning cases till May 3, followed by 313 in Ferozepur, 261 in Bathinda, 237 in Tarn Taran, 213 in Fazilka, 192 in Mansa, 183 in Muktsar, 147 in Barnala, 132 in Patiala, 118 in Hoshiarpur and 107 in Faridkot.Haryana recorded 244 crop residue burning incidents on Sunday, as the total tally in the state climbed to 2,529.Madhya Pradesh, which tops the overall count with 33,329 farm fire incidents, on Sunday registered 550 cases, while Uttar Pradesh reported 206 incidents.The total crop residue burning cases so far this reached 52,428. While MP leads the chart with 63.5% of the total farm fires, UP follows in second place with a cumulative count of 13,707 incidents.According to the Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modelling from Space (CREAMS), MP has reported over 51% of the total crop residue burning cases recorded in the last five years. Out of the total 2,50,967 cases reported from 2022 to May 3, 2026, 1,28,015 cases have been registered in MP, followed by 59,698 cases in UP, 50,797 in Punjab, 12,298 in Haryana and 159 in Delhi.A maximum 4,006 crop residue burning cases have been reported from Videsha district of Madhya Pradesh. Out of these, 18 FIRs were filed on May 2, including 15 in Bathinda.Till now, a maximum of 22 FIRs have been filed in Bathinda, followed by 15 in Mansa, six in Kapurthala, four in Jalandhar, three each in Barnala and Faridkot and one in Moga.Also, 113 red entries have been made in the land records pertaining to the violators, including 54 in a day, and Rs 8.15 lakh environmental compensation has been imposed in 157 cases.
