SP Mohan Lal suspended

A fortnight after the arrest of the 2002 batch Punjab Police Services (PPS) officer, SP Mohan Lal, for allegedly forcing a 19-year old girl, Lovepreet Kaur to commit suicide, the Punjab government has suspended him from his services on Thursday.

CHANDIGARH: A fortnight after the arrest of the 2002 batch Punjab Police Services (PPS) officer, SP Mohan Lal, for allegedly forcing a 19-year old girl, Lovepreet Kaur to commit suicide, the Punjab government has suspended him from his services on Thursday. The step " which could have been taken immediately after his arrest " was taken after going through media reports, police sources said.

Lal was arrested on June 26, and he was sent to sub-jail Ropar on June 30, after keeping him in three days police custody. Kaur had jumped to her death from the balcony of a sixth floor apartment in Zirakpur on May 17.
Initially, nobody had moved any complaint against Lal. But on June 23, Kaur"s father, Lakhwinder Singh " a head constable in the Punjab Police " filed a criminal complaint with the Mohali police. An official spokesman of the state government said suspension orders were issued under Section 4, 2A of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970. The spokesman said that during the suspension period, Lal would be attached with the DGP headquarters in Sector 9.2A of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970.
