Sonipat man ends life over Rs 50L visa fraud; family demands action against agent
Sonipat: A 31-year-old man from Sonipat allegedly committed suicide after consuming poison, reportedly distressed over an alleged fraud of around Rs 50 lakh linked to promises of sending his younger brother to the United States. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over illegal immigration networks and unscrupulous agents operating under the guise of overseas placements. According to the family, a local resident had assured them of facilitating the overseas travel through a person allegedly posted with the Delhi Police. To arrange the funds, the family sold their land and managed nearly Rs 1 crore, out of which around Rs 50 lakh was paid to the agent. However, neither was the victim's brother sent abroad nor was the money returned. The deceased's brother, Mohit, alleged that he was first sent to Brazil, where he was kept for nearly two months, before being moved to Mumbai and later to Ethiopia. He claimed that he was held at these locations for extended periods on false assurances of being sent to the US, but was eventually sent back to India. Family members further alleged that when they demanded a refund, the accused initially promised to return the money and even issued an affidavit, but later reneged on their commitment. They also claimed that the family was subjected to repeated threats and intimidation, including warnings of being falsely implicated in criminal cases. The prolonged financial loss and pressure reportedly left Rohit under severe mental stress. On the night of March 31, Rohit was reportedly at a restaurant near Chhotu Ram Chowk with his friend Ankush, where they were consuming alcohol. It is alleged that he was provoked during the interaction, following which he consumed sulphas tablets. His condition deteriorated shortly thereafter. Before taking the extreme step, Rohit had called his uncle and reportedly said, "Only my dead body will return home." The statement, family members said, reflected his deteriorating mental state. Police reached the spot after receiving information and sent the body for post-mortem examination at a civil hospital. The family has held certain local individuals and agents responsible for the death, and has demanded strict action and immediate arrests. Sonipat City SHO Inspector Anil said the deceased was a resident of Jarothi village. "No arrests have been made so far. A forensic team inspected the scene and collected samples, which have been sent to the Madhuban laboratory for analysis," he said. Police added that the investigation is underway from all angles, and further action will be taken based on the findings. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family, and the last rites were performed in the village.MSID:: 129953692 413 |
