Singh Sabha
has hailed the Congress for projecting Charanjit Singh Channi, a Dalit, as its chief ministerial candidate for
Punjab.
In a press release issued here on Monday, the
sabha
said: "The Congress did what the Shiromani Akali Dal and local political formations couldn’t do. The choice could be by default but even if it’s for votes, it gives Dalits the hope for social equality and a say in governance."
The Sikh organisation claimed that three years ago, it had started exposing caste discrimination in Sikh society, inspired by how
Sikh Gurus
had fought this social evil by introducing the practice of ‘langar’ (common kitchen). On October 20, 2020, the sabha had observed 100th anniversary of any untouchable’s first step into the Golden Temple. The sabha didn’t support any political party openly but said that: "A Dalit’s elevation as the CM candidate befits the land of Sikh Gurus.
