Sidhu, Pargat back wrestlers protesting against harassment

Chandigarh: Senior Punjab Congress leaders Navjot Singh Sidhu and Pargat Singh on Friday came out in support of the wrestlers protesting against the alleged sexual harassment by Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.While cricketer-turned-politician Sidhu announced to join their protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday, Olympian Pargat Singh demanded registration of a police case and arrest of Brij Bhushan.Expressing displeasure over the lack of action on complaints of alleged sexual harassment made by women wrestlers, Sidhu tweeted: “Shocking that nine women of recognition complained and no FIR was registered. It will be a tear on the cheek of time in Indian history. Any country that insults its women icons is hurting its own pride. These women have brought laurels to the nation. They have given wings to the aspirations of millions. Hurting their self-esteem is hurting India’s pride.”“Are the bigwigs of our country above the law? The law must set a deterrent that generations must tremble before insulting women. A good example is the best sermon you can preach,” he added.While extending support to the protesting wrestlers, Pargat Singh said: “No one will come out in streets unless one was harassed to the brim.” He also criticised other athletes, who faced similar situations, but were acting as “mute spectators”.Taking a dig at Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha, Pargat said she should have defended and stood by her fellow sportspersons. tnn
