Security on SOI agenda for student council elections
CHANDIGARH: After the Chandigarh stalking case hit headlines, the issue of women’s security has made it to the agenda of different student parties contesting Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections. On Thursday, SOI announced the campus panel for campaigning and announced that security, especially that of women, is their main election agenda.

“We resolved the basic infrastructure demands of the University when we were in power. We are going to make this campus the safest in the country for all students. I am not particularly restricting it to girl students because I don’t think they are that weak. We will make the campus safe with the latest technology including CCTV cameras, proper lighting and proper security,” said national coordinator and chairman, Youth Development Board, SAD, S Parambans Singh Bunty Romana while announcing the panel.
He said SOI is confident of making a comeback and would complete unfinished tasks this time. Romana also said SOI would compare its report card with that of the last year’s council and the council in power in 2014-15. He claimed no other student body had done as much as SOI had done for the varsity in its 2015-16 tenure.
When asked why the SAD, which was in power in alliance with the BJP in Punjab till earlier this year, failed to enhance financial assistance to the University, Romana said Congress has given only around Rs 8 crore enhancement while the party provided Rs 10 crore infrastructure boost to the University, which is more than what Congress delivered.
