CHANDIGARH: Raising security concerns, the principal of DAV School in Sector 15, Anuja Sharma, has submitted a representation to the UT administrator to not shift 1,800 vendors to Sector 15 as the

vending zone

approved is adjacent to the boundary wall of the girls hostel and the school. She also pointed out that the school authorities will not be able to raise the height of the boundary wall.

The vending site proposed is where Apni Mandi is held every week. The boundary wall of the school forms a buffer zone between the security of the school students and the outside environment. Since the present height of the boundary wall is as per the building bylaws, it cannot be raised further.

Also as per CBSE bylaws, there should not be any commercial activities taking place near the boundary walls of any educational institutes housing children below 18 years of age. "Allowing the street vendors to shift right next to the walls of the educational institute will result in serious lapses in the security of the students in the educational institute," she added.

It was further stated by the school authorities the school is grappling with a security concerns right now with anti-social elements roaming in the vicinity of the school during evening hours. "A complaint had been forwarded to the Chandigarh SSP by the school management in this regard. Creating a vendor zone next to the school will lead to the situation drastically deteriorating. The hostel inmates will be the worst affected as they stay here 24x7.

The traffic congestion during the morning and afternoon hours of the school creates a lot of pressure on the already crumbling traffic situation in front of the school premises. Creating a vending zone next to the wall of the school will lead to added pressure on the traffic chaos and the city administration, the school principal said.
