However, after these attendance defaulters cleared their exams, the college allegedly blocked their admission to the next year, asking them to complete their course through correspondence from PU’s distance learning centre or from a private college or university.

The admissions of around 100 students were blocked by the college. As the last date passed, the students on Monday took to protesting and sat outside the college gate, raising slogans against the college administration. After the students’ protest, the college reportedly removed the blockage in their admission. However, since the last date for admission had already gone, the final decision for admission now lies with the

.

After college’s approval, the case for admission of the students has been sent to PU, which may take the decision regarding the same on Friday.

The last date for admissions at PU was August 31 with late fee, which was further extended to September 11.

With their future hanging in balance, the students are now wondering why the college blocked their admission even after taking money for their low attendance.

A student said: “I had paid Rs 1,000 to the college to get my roll number for the second year final exams. After I passed the exams, the college blocked my admission to the third year, asking me to complete the course from some other college or university. How is this even possible? There were others who paid even higher fines. The students had genuine reasons such as illness for being absent.”

A complaint in this regard was filed by a student to PU authorities, which was later withdrawn when the college removed blockage on admission.

SD College

principal Balraj Thapar said the college was making “major qualitative changes” and had, thus, blacklisted certain students for their conduct. He said: “The students had been warned about their low attendance at the time of handing over their roll number in April. The fine collected was for being absent only and was not a guarantee for admission to the next year. They had been advised to shift to correspondence department of the university or other college for the remaining years of their course.”
