CHANDIGARH: GGDSD College in Sector 32––the only college among 152 institutions affiliated to Panjab University to be conferred the 'potential for excellence' status by the University Grants Commission––is now on its way to become autonomous.
In a letter dated May 28, UGC joint secretary G Gunashakheran has written to the PU vice chancellor to encourage the college to opt for autonomy.

The letter also specifies that changes, if required, in the university calendar for the purpose should also be made. Panjab University's calendar already has a provision for academic autonomy.
The Commission has been promoting its 'autonomy to colleges' scheme since the fifth Plan to enable them to introduce innovations in the fields of curriculum designing, teaching and evaluation.
While the general developmental grant is given to all colleges, those that are granted autonomous status are given additional funds.
GGDSD College principal AC Vaid said,"I am already negotiating with the staff as becoming autonomous would also mean a lot of work for them. We will try to put things in order within this year".
He said autonomy will mean that the college will have its own syllabi for various subjects, and will have to evaluate answers books and set question papers itself.

The board of studies, teaching faculties and an academic council with two university representatives have to be set up, in addition to a confidential cell to supervise examinations.
The UGC had earlier notified its decision to give the 'potential for excellence' status to the college on May 4 under the tenth Plan. A grant of Rs 30 lakh has already been released to the college under this scheme.
Dr Vaid said the college has drawn up an ambitious plan to spend about Rs 12 crore over a period of 3 years to further improve standards of excellence.
Construction of a multipurpose gymnasium cum auditorium, with a capacity of 1,100 students, has already started, and a greenhouse and herbarium is on the cards.
