Sacrifices of Diwan Singh remembered

Chandigarh: In a poignant tribute to the legacy of Dr Diwan Singh, a memorial trust formed in his name, in collaboration with Baba Prithvi Singh Azad Chair at Panjab University, organised a symposium, “Cellular (Kalepani) Jail: Experiential Narratives”. The event’s chief guest was SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who highlighted the role of Punjabis in the freedom struggle of the country.The symposium started with Prof Paru Bal Sidhu, chairperson of PU’s Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology department and granddaughter of Diwan Singh Kalepani, sharing a heartfelt account of her grandfather’s profound connection with Cellular Jail. “Dr Singh was horrifically tortured for 82 days by the Japanese and on the 83rd day, he achieved martyrdom in wing number 6 of the dreaded jail. His sacrifice remains unparalleled in the history of Colonial India,” she added.Dhami said, “The trust has set up a museum in the memory of the great freedom fighter. The SGPC has already initiated projects on freedom fighters, under which a book titled “Kalapani: Punjabis’ Role in Freedom Struggle” was released in June.

PM Modi pays tributes to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh

Chandigarh BJP president Arun Sood led a delegation to meet Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit. The delegation demanded that the children of freedom fighters should receive a 2% reservation in government jobs and free medical treatment in main hospitals. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary, acknowledging his sacrifice and dedication to India's freedom. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP state unit is discussing the situation following the AIADMK's exit from the NDA alliance, while an air show featuring 65 fighter planes and helicopters will take place in Bhopal.

Rly stn road to be named after freedom fighter

The road to Mangaluru Central Railway Station in India is set to be named after freedom fighter Ammembala Balappa. The proposal has been sent to the standing committee on town planning by the Mangaluru City Corporation. Balappa was born in 1922 and participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He played a key role in the drafting of land reforms law and was known for his initiatives for the welfare of the poor and Dalits. The proposal will now be processed according to government guidelines before seeking approval.
