Kotli Surat Malhi police station SHO Surinder Singh told TOI on Thursday that the girl was a resident of Chainewal village and had left her house to visit her maternal uncle at Nawan Pind in Amritsar district on February 17, 2008. But she did not reach there and was missing since then.
When worried parents began searching for her, they came to know that she was abducted by one Bhinda of Khokhar village in the district and was later rescued from his house.
After being rescued, the parents, instead of bringing her home fearing social stigma of their daughter being raped, took her to a Dera of Baba Lakha Ditta at Dhapai village, where grandmother of the girl was staying, to perform sewa, the SHO said.
According to police, the condition of the girl suddenly deteriorated due to profuse bleeding. She apparently succumbed to the rape injuries when she was being taken to an Amritsar village in a car at about 11.30 pm on Wednesday night.

Batala SSP, RN Dhoke, was not available for comment, but SHO Surinder Singh said that on the complaint of the girls father, police registered a case under sections 304 and 376 of IPC against Bhinda and an unidentified accomplice, both of whom were absconding.
Area police and residents of the village on Thursday also raised questions about the role of parents who did not lodge a complaint with police about the girl who was missing since February 17, 2008 and as to why she was not brought back to the village and was instead taken to an Amritsar village Dera.
While her body has been handed over to parents for cremation on Thursday, only post mortem report will unveil the mystery as to what caused her death, Singh said. Meanwhile, police have launched a hunt for the accused and their possible hideouts were being raided, he added.
