patiala: the punjab state women’s commission has sent its detailed report on the saru rana episode to the national commission for women for appropriate action. this was disclosed by its chairperson, surinder kaur grewal, talking to times news network, on sunday. it is worthwhile to note that a student of the fine arts department, saru rana had got registered a criminal case against the punjabi university vice-chancellor jasbir singh ahluwalia, fine arts department head saroj rani and two others.

meanwhile, punjab higher education secretary summoned saru rana and vice-chancellor jasbir singh ahluwalia to complete its inquiry before taking any further action. the police had already sent its detailed report to punjab chief minister amarinder singh, who said ahluwalia’s future as the vicechancellor would be decided within a few days. according to legal experts there is no provision in the university calendar to remove the vice-chancellor from his post, but he could be sent on leave for the remaining period. in connection with the interim bail application filed by ahluwalia, saroj rani and the two others, a local court of patiala had fixed the next hearing for march 4. according to sources, saru rana had recently given a statement before the magistrate. though the details are not yet known, according to sources the statement could give another twist to the case.
