CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh administration has indicated its inclination to reconsider the notification on the issue of rent, in particular the portion pertaining to exemption to buildings and rented land having a monthly rent exceeding Rs 1,500, from the provisions of the East Punjab Rent Restriction (extension to Chandigarh) Act, 1974.
This was submitted by Rajiv Atma Ram standing counsel for the Chandigarh administration before a division bench of Chief Justice Binod Kumar Roy and Justice Surya Kant after a suggestion in this regard was made by the bench during the resumed hearing on a bunch of petitions.
He also sought time to enable the authorities concerned to go into the matter in line with the suggestion of the bench.
The bench favoured that a balance be struck between the interests of the tenants and the landlords in terms of provisions of economic and social protection envisaged in the preamble of the Constitution of India.
This came through at the conclusion of arguments, wherein the former Union law minister Shanti Bhushan, appearing for the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, sought rescinding of the notification.
After Rajiv Atma Ram had made the submission, the bench adjourned the case for further hearing to May 11, by when the Chandigarh administration was expected to have reconsidered the notification.
