CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) initiated a disproportionate assets (DA) inquiry against deputy superintendent of police Gursher Singh Sandhu, whose file for dismissal was cleared by the Punjab govt for not joining the probe into jailed gangster
Lawrence Bishnoi's TV interview.
A Punjab govt functionary said the DA probe was initiated against Sandhu following allegations of “purchase of disputed properties at cheaper rates” and “purchase of properties from ill-gotten wealth.”
A VB official stated, “Following a complaint and Gursher Sandhu, a disproportionate assets inquiry was initiated. We are collecting the details of his properties, and whether he accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and ancestral property will be known after the detailed analysis during the inquiry.”
The official mentioned that the probe was initiated over “a complaint by Baljinder Singh.”
Earlier in October this year, Punjab police informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that Sandhu was booked in a cheating and corruption case at the State Crime police station in Mohali on the complaint of Baljinder Singh, once an associate of Sandhu.
The FIR was lodged following a probe by the Punjab police on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court after Baljinder moved court against Sandhu.
On December 16, the Punjab govt informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it dismissed DSP Gursher Sandhu under section 311 (2) of the Constitution for his alleged role in the TV interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi from Kharar CIA premises in September 2022.
According to a top functionary of the Punjab govt, DSP Sandhu was dismissed as he was “not co-operating in the inquiry.” Gursher Sandhu was not available for comment despite repeated attempts and texts sent to him.
