NEW DELHI:
An encounter broke out between Punjab Police and gangsters in Kheda village of Tarn Taran district on Saturday, resulting in two gangsters sustaining injuries while one was arrested.
A police vehicle was also hit by a bullet during the exchange of fire.
According to police sources, three gangsters—Arshdeep Singh, Robinpreet Singh, and Karandeep Singh—were involved in the shootout.
They are known to have a criminal history, particularly in cases related to extortion and drug trafficking under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act).
SP Ajay Raj Singh, the investigating officer in the case, stated that the trio was associated with gangster Gopi Numberdar and was heading towards Kheda village when the police received a tip-off about their movements.
"Our raid party was on patrol when we received information about some suspicious individuals arriving in Kheda village. When an attempt was made to stop them, they opened fire. The three—Arshdeep Singh, Robinpreet Singh, and Karandeep Singh—were on a motorcycle," SP Singh said.
In retaliation, police opened fire in self-defense, injuring Arshdeep Singh and Robinpreet Singh, while Karandeep Singh was apprehended on the spot. Notably, Arshdeep Singh was already wanted in a murder case.
Following the encounter, police have registered an FIR and will take the arrested suspect into remand for further questioning regarding their intended activities in Kheda.
"The arrested individual will be interrogated to uncover their plans for which they were heading to Kheda village. FIR is being registered immediately," SP Singh added.
