Punjab logs over 1k excess rain for 3rd time in a week
Bathinda: Heavy rainfall in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in the past 24 hours has worsened the flood situation in Punjab, causing water levels to rise in rivers and seasonal rivulets, and putting more districts at risk.
Punjab recorded 1,104% excess rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sept 1, receiving 41 mm of rain against a normal of 3.4 mm. This was the third instance in the last week when the state recorded over a thousand percent excess rain than normal. In the previous 24 hours, Punjab recorded 957% excess rain. Himachal Pradesh recorded 667% excess rainfall, with 39.12 mm against a normal of 5.1 mm, while Haryana recorded 616% excess rain at 26.5 mm against a normal of 3.7 mm.
The Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers, already in spate, have been joined by the seasonal rivulet Ghaggar, which is now posing a threat to villages in Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, and Mansa. During the 2023 floods, the Ghaggar caused extensive damage, including the inundation of Sardulgarh town.
In the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sept 1, a total of 220 mm of rainfall was recorded at Nangal in Rupnagar; 200 mm in Jalandhar; 180 mm in Rupnagar; 170 mm each in Kotla in Rupnagar, Khanna in Ludhiana, and Ganguwal in Rupnagar; 150 mm at Lohand in Rupnagar; 120 mm in Ludhiana; 110 mm each in Malout in Muktsar, Bhadson in Patiala, and Ballowal Saunkri in SBS Nagar; 100 mm each in Bharatgarh in Rupnagar, Balachaur in SBS Nagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib, 90 mm each in Nawanshahr, Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur, Nakodar in Jalandhar, and Amloh in Fatehgarh Sahib.
In Himachal Pradesh, 220 mm of rainfall was recorded in Bilaspur district; 200 mm in Pachhad, Sirmaur; 190 mm each in Naina Devi, Bilaspur and Solan; 180 mm in Nahan, Sirmaur; 170 mm in Jatton Barrage, Sirmaur; 130 mm each in Kasauli, Sangraha, Sirmaur, Renuka/Dadhau, Sirmaur, Rohru, Shimla, and Dharampur, Solan; 120 mm each in Una and Shimla, 110 mm each in Paonta Sahib, Sirmaur, and Kandaghat in Solan and 100 mm in Barthin, Bilaspur.
In Haryana, 130 mm of rainfall was recorded in Sirsa; 120 mm in Morni, Panchkula; 90 mm each in Barwala, Hisar, Jakhal Mandi, Fatehabad, and Uklana in Hisar; 80 mm each in Fatehabad, Rajaund, Kaithal, Sonepat, and Tohana, Fatehabad, and 70 mm each in Kalka, Panchkula, and Narnaul, Mahendragarh.
