Punjab Civic Body Election Results 2026 Live Updates: Highlights
The Punjab Municipal Elections 2026 have reached a critical climax as the State Election Commission begins counting votes across 102 local bodies. Widely regarded as a political semifinal before the upcoming state legislative assembly elections, this democratic exercise carries immense weight for the state's dominant political factions. A total of 22.38 lakh citizens cast their ballots across 3,833 polling booths to decide the governance of eight major municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils, and 20 nagar panchayats. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has approached counting day with public optimism, viewing a potential victory as a definitive public validation of its current governance and a green-lit path toward accelerated urban development. However, this optimism is heavily countered by a united front of opposition parties. Leaders from Congress, SAD, and the BJP have aggressively confronted the ruling party, submitting formal grievances over alleged systemic irregularities. Accusations range from voter intimidation and the disruption of ballot secrecy to the outright weaponization of the police force on polling day.To maintain order amid these escalating tensions, authorities have executed a massive logistical deployment involving 32,000 police personnel and 35,000 election staff. With nearly a thousand polling booths designated as sensitive or hypersensitive, security at counting centres remains airtight to guarantee an uncompromised tally.
