CHANDIGARH: With Holi celebrations in full swing all around and Panjab University (PU) closed for the coming weekend, its student council celebrated Women's Day on Thursday.
While the keynote speaker
Sharmistha Mukherjee, a politician and Kathak dancer, said that the difference between being a man or a woman was only biological, Justice Daya Choudhary and Justice Raj Rahul Garg both stressed that there was no objective comparison.
"The imbalance exists only because of masculine qualities being given more importance," said Garg.
Mentioning women as a symbol of perseverance, Mukherjee referred to the Shiva-Parvati trilogy. "While as Natraja, Shiva's Tandav reflects destruction, Parvati's Lasya is the dance of perseverance and symbolizes women," she added. She also said that women should come to the forefront on their own and even take decisions if they were involved in politics - rather than acting as proxies.
The day that started with a panel discussion on celebrating the essence of being a woman also saw declamation, mehndi and poster-making competitions with around 60 participants from the university.
A street play amidst colours of Holi was performed at the Student Centre. Directed by Veena Dhir, the play stressed upon women's safety and education.
The law auditorium saw a crowd enjoying the performance of Nooran sisters in the 'cultural nite' of the programme.
"The true success of the programme lies in the fact that women were honoured and most of our volunteers were girls," said PUCSC vice president Snigdha Bawa.
