CHANDIGARH: In what turned out to be an all girls affair yet again, 409 out of total 578 toppers who received their degrees at the 61st Annual Convocation of Panjab University were girl students. Witnessing a skewed attendance of teachers, with not more than 5% of total teachers on campus present during the ceremony, the function was well-attended by varsity's syndicate and senate members who were present in large numbers.
PU also conferred honourary PhD degrees to leader of opposition in Lok Sabha,
Sushma Swaraj, a PU law department alumnus of 1973 batch, and Somnath Chaterjee whose honourary degree was approved by the varsity senate last year.
Scientist V P Kamboj received Vigyan Ratan Award, while
Pratap Agarwal was awarded Udyog Ratan Award. Hamid Ansari, vice-president of India and chancellor of PU, who presided over the ceremony and addressed the convocation, urged the youngsters to set their own goals. "You could choose to either conform or go against the flow of your peers," added Ansari.
