Minor’s murder: 48 hrs on, family refuses to lift dharna
Mohali: The protest on Airport Road over the brutal murder of a juvenile has reached a fever pitch, with family members and villagers from Kumbran refusing to lift the blockade, which stretches for kilometres, until their demands are met. It’s been over 48 hours that they placed the body of the victim in a casket on the road, refusing to perform the final rites till justice is served.Victim Damanpreet Singh (17) and his friend, Dilpreet (16), were brutally attacked with sharp weapons on Wednesday. Dilpreet is battling for life at a local hospital.The protesters have put forth several demands through their memorandum to the chief minister. These include swift arrest of the accused, financial compensation for the bereaved family, and employment assistance for a family member. Their concerns about tenant verification and address documentation have also been highlighted in their demands.The situation has garnered significant attention from the local administration, with MLA Kulwant Singh and SSP Mohali Deepak Pareek making earnest efforts to resolve the matter. Police teams have intensified their search operations across various locations to apprehend the suspects.MLA Kulwant Singh, while assuring the grieving family members, said: “We sympathise deeply with the family. The deceased boy was like family to me. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the accused are arrested. We have directed the police to expedite their search and deliver results swiftly.”Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Deepak Pareek said: “We have assured the grieving family members that the police teams are actively pursuing the two main suspects, who will be apprehended soon. We have also requested the protesters to lift the blockade and maintain peace.”Local residents have shown strong solidarity with the grieving family, maintaining a continuous presence at the protest site. The blocked Airport Road has caused traffic diversions, significantly impacting daily commuters and travellers.Police officials have established additional security measures around the protest area to maintain law and order. Regular updates on the ongoing investigation are being shared with the family to ensure transparency in the process.The administration has assured the protesters that all their demands are being considered seriously. Special investigation teams have been formed to expedite the case and gather crucial evidence. Local authorities are also coordinating with neighbouring districts to trace the absconding accused.Community leaders have also stepped in to mediate between the authorities and the protesters, attempting to find a resolution that addresses the family’s concerns while maintaining public order.
