BATHINDA: Ahead of the protest call by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha on March 5 at Chandigarh, police conducted raids at the residences of several farmer leaders during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Raids were carried out at the homes of BKU Ekta Ugrahan president Joginder Singh Ugrahan, vice president Jhanda Singh Jethuke, BKU Lakhowal leader Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Kirti Kisan Union leader Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala, and other farmer group leaders. The move comes amid rising tensions as farmers prepare for their protest in Chandigarh.

At some places the leaders succeeded in evading arrests while some others were taken into custody.

The action started after the talks failed between the Punjab government and the leaders of Samyukt Kisan Morcha Monday evening.

The farmer leaders including Sanyukt Kisan Morcha Non-Political leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal condemned the action of the state government and stated that snatching right to demonstrate is undemocratic. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher also assailed the action of the police.
