Bahadurgarh: A plumber died after allegedly being exposed to toxic sewer gas while cleaning a tank at a private trust-run hospital in Haryana's Bahadurgarh, triggering protests by family members who accused the management of negligence and lack of safety measures.
The deceased, Sunil, died during treatment on Thursday, three days after the incident in which five workers reportedly fell unconscious during sewer cleaning operations inside the hospital premises.
His family refused to accept the body and demanded Rs 1 crore in compensation, a govt job for Sunil's wife, and action against those responsible. They said the last rites would not be performed until the hospital and university management gave written assurance on compensation and accountability.
According to family members, Sunil had been called to work on an off day and was allegedly forced to enter the sewer tank without safety equipment.
Police have registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against eight persons, including officials associated with the hospital, at Bahadurgarh Sadar police station.
