“We have come to ensure emergent medical care facilities are provided to the fasting leader. We have provided well-equipped ambulances and other equipment at the site. We appeal to the farmers to accept the medical care facilities on humanitarian grounds in coordination with the state govt,” the DGP told mediapersons after holding talks with Dallewal.

Dallewal has been sitting on a fast-unto death for various demands, mainly legal guarantee for MSP, since Nov 26. The Supreme Court had earlier noted the importance of Dallewal as a senior farmer leader and emphasised the need to prioritise his health and life in the larger context of agricultural issues.

The DGP said that Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann is in communication with the central govt to resume dialogue with the protesting farmers.

Mayank Mishra, director, Union ministry of home affairs, said that he had come to listen to their demands of farmers according to the orders of the Supreme Court.

Dallewal has declined medical care, says farmer leader Kohad

Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohad, who was present at the site, said that Dallewal declined to accept any type of medical care while emphasising that the lives of the seven lakh farmers who had committed suicide in the past years were more valuable than his own.

Dallewal urged the govt to focus on the pressing demands of the farmers, including debt waivers and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations for fixing MSP, Kohad said.

A bench of the Supreme Court, showing its concern for Dallewal’s health, on Dec 13 directed the central and Punjab govts to provide immediate medical aid without making him break the fast. The court had also asked the Punjab govt to meet the fasting leader as his life is more precious than the agitation.

In the meantime, leader of opposition in Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa met Dallewal and accused the central govt of not listening to the protesting farmers. Haryana Congress MLA and Olympian Vinesh Phogat also met Dallewal and expressed her concern over his deteriorating health.
