Pathankot flooded after downpour in hills leads to rise in Ujh
PATHANKOT/GURDASPUR: Incessant rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has resulted in the flooding of Pathankot's Bamyal area. It has also led to an increase in the water level of the Ujh river, which now threatens to flood border villages in Gurdaspur district too.
On Wednesday morning, the situation escalated after the water level rose sharply in the Ujh and overflowing water flooded the town's Bamial Chowk and its surrounding areas.
Bamial police check post, the local block development and panchayat office (BDPO), and health centres were flooded, leading to challenging circumstances for residents and authorities.
As the news of water rising in the area was received by the district administration, an alert was issued among the people living in villages along the Ujh at 4am. Since then, 18 Gujjar families have been evacuated along with their livestock and shifted to a temporary relief camp at ITI, Pathankot. The administration has also advised the people to move to safer locations.
Pathankot deputy commissioner Harbir Singh said 2.80 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the Ujh, which in turn significantly affected the villages of Danwal, and the posts of BSF in Khudaipur, Yaidpur, Bamial, and Old Bamial.
Vijay Dutt, a member of Punjab State Food Commission, has asked for a list of schools affected by flooding in Pathankot. The commission has also sought information about the anganwadi centers in the flood-affected areas.
After the release of 2.6 lakh cusecs of water in the Ujh, the Gurdaspur district administration also swung into action and the officials of the district administration visited villages near the Ravi river and the bordering villages to assess and manage flood-control measures.
After assessing the situation of water levels in the Ravi and Ujh, Gurdaspur DC Himanshu Aggarwal said the flood situation in Gurudaspur district was entirely under control, and there was no need to panic.
He informed that the water flow from the Ujh, coming from the Jammu region, had decreased significantly, and by Wednesday evening, all water would pass through the district via the Ravi.
