CHANDIGARH: The vehicle carrying the question papers for Panjab University CET-2006 took five days to cover a distance of 740 kilometres from printing press to Chandigarh which means the average speed of the vehicle was not more than seven kilometre per hour. While Panjab University is yet to make the inquiry report in the CET fiasco public, according to sources in his explanation to the the university, the printer has said that there was a mishap on May 18 in the night after which he kept driving the vehicle at a very low speed and with lot of breaks in between.
The driver of the vehicle informed the transporter about the problem in the vehicle and about his location from Meerut bypass, which was on May 21 as per the explanation. This raises a question that what was the driver doing for three days and was not even aware that he had to reach the destination by May 20 morning in any case.
More than the driver it is the lax attitude of the printer and university which is questionable. The printer should have sent a responsible person with the vehicle who could have immediately raised an alarm in case of emergency. While the controller of examination and vice chancellor should have monitored the movements of the vehicle and should have got alert immediately because ideally the vehicle should have covered 740 kilometres in maximum two days.
Not only this, according to the sources the printer lodged the FIR about the missing vehicle carrying question papers on May 20, which was the scheduled date for CET. This implies that printer did not bother about the vehicle before they were asked to give an answer by PU after they were in for embarrassment. It can be recalled here that PU CET-2006 got cancelled on May 20 and will now be conducted on June 12 as the vehicle carrying the question papers failed to reach the destination in time.
