Chandigarh: The Cyber Police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly duping a woman of about Rs 40 lakh in the guise of an occultist. He pretended to be performing rituals to eliminate her problems. The accused was identified as Rohit Bhargav, a resident of Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. Police said the victim, a Chandigarh resident, was under stress due to family problems. She came in contact with the accused through social media advertisements. Police said Bhargav and his accomplice took advantage of the victim's vulnerable mental state, gradually won her confidence and created fear through claims of supernatural threats, assuring relief upon payment. Between Feb 2024 and May 2025, the victim was frequently induced to transfer money to different bank accounts, and about 150 grams of gold jewellery was taken from her. The total amount reached about Rs 40 lakh, including online money transactions and gold jewellery. During investigation, police obtained call records, customer application forms and bank documents. Cyber police conducted a raid in Jhunjhunu, during which Bhargav was arrested.
