No panelist belongs to BJP/RSS: Professor Kapil Kapoor

CHANDIGARH: Two days after a Panjab University professor questioned the constitution of the search committee formed to appoint the new vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Kapil Kapoor, a member of the search committee, said that it is a categorical truth that no pressure was exercised on the committee and no one from the committee belonged to any organizations (BJP/RSS).

In a reply to PU Prof Rupinder Tewari’s question “how can a pro-vice chancellor select the vice-chancellor of a university?”, Kapoor said that academically, he challenges all these people to match up to his bio-data.

“No pressure was exercised on this committee and we don’t belong to any organization. We went through the right processes that are required and arrived at an academic agreement,” Kapoor told TOI.

Kapoor reiterated that he is not merely a pro-vice chancellor, as mentioned in the letter written by Tewari, and challenged everybody to match up to his academic achievements as he has been a teacher for over 59 years, which Kapoor said was his greatest qualification.

“The letter is actually questioning the people who appointed that committee. I am not merely a pro-vice-chancellor. By that logic, I have also done matriculation so am I only a matriculate? I was the chancellor of a Central university and chairman of MHRD language expert committee. Right now, I am the chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies,

, and besides being the chairman of the standing committee of historical records of the national archives. I have been a teacher for 59 years and I think that is my greatest qualification. I think it will take a lot of time and energy for people to equal the kind of academic work and teaching that I have done,” said Prof Kapoor, adding that another thing that needed to be corrected was that he is not the chairman of the search committee.

Since Tewari had also taken issue with the criteria adopted to select the VC, Prof Kapoor said, “When the applications come, they are processed administratively and then they come to all of us. We generally have a preliminary meeting and after series of discussions arrive at fixing parameters. We meet again and compare our notes and then we arrive at consensus. There are parameters, which can be revealed only when there is a need to do so.”
