New mayor faces civic test as Mohali flags garbage, roads, parking woes
Mohali: Mohali’s new mayor faces immediate pressure to act, with residents, RWAs and traders seeking quick fixes to long-pending civic issues — garbage disposal, damaged roads, parking crunch, traffic congestion, stray animals and vendor encroachments.
Garbage has emerged as the top concern, with overflowing collection points, delayed lifting and littered public spaces reported across sectors. Residents say the situation has begun to impact both cleanliness and public health.
RWAs have also flagged poor internal roads and sought urgent repair and resurfacing, along with a comprehensive plan to curb stray dogs and cattle. “These issues have persisted for long. We expect priority action and visible improvement at the grassroots level,” said an RWA representative.
Traders highlighted inadequate parking and unchecked encroachments in market areas. “We need a practical parking policy and better traffic management. Unauthorised vending must be regulated without hurting business or public convenience,” said Paramjit Singh Jaura of the Mohali Jewellers’ Association.
Residents echoed the demand for basic services. “Clean surroundings, smooth roads and proper parking are essentials. The focus should be on delivery,” said Sukhbir Singh Baweja.
Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana said garbage management would be tackled first. “Work has begun from day one. Residents will see visible improvement within a week,” he said, adding that the Corporation is assessing gaps in waste collection and disposal.
With expectations running high, stakeholders now look to the new civic leadership to translate assurances into tangible improvements.
