New agri project to focus on hydroponics, sustainability

Gurdaspur: A unique agricultural initiative inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak is set to take shape in Punjab with the launch of "Guru Nanak Kheti".The project will be inaugurated with an ardas and is being jointly launched by Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Dadar, Mumbai, and Akal Purakh Ki Fauj at Jainpur village in Gurdaspur district on March 16. Jaswinder Singh Advocate, convener, Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, said the initiative seeks to connect agriculture with the timeless principles of "kirat" and "seva" as taught by Guru Nanak, making them relevant in the context of modern farming challenges. He said that the idea emerged during relief efforts carried out for farmers affected by recent floods, when volunteers realised that one-time assistance cannot provide lasting economic stability to farmers. Instead, a sustainable and knowledge-based approach was needed to empower them in the long run. Jaswinder said under the project, farmers will be introduced to modern and sustainable farming techniques, including hydroponic models, intercropping, and water-efficient cultivation practices. The initiative will also focus on preserving traditional seed varieties and encouraging their use, while blending them with innovative agricultural practices. Another important component of the programme will be educating farmers about crop processing and value addition, enabling them to access markets directly and secure better returns for their produce. Harvinderpal said that the initiative aims to inspire farmers by combining spiritual values with practical agricultural knowledge, reflecting Guru Nanak's message of dignity of labour and responsible living.
