There has been an increase in cases of murders, abductions, rapes and molestations while the state saw decline in dowry deaths.
The minister said the government was committed towards the safety of women in the state. "We have already taken several measures like 'zero FIR' for crime against women (for prompt registration of cases) and setting up of special help desk and women police stations," he said.
Women and child development department minister Kavita Jain said, "Why don't you appreciate the fact that it is only during our tenure when crime has been reported properly as women are fearlessly walking to the police stations. This has served as a deterrent. This should not be treated as an increase in crimes against women."
On the other hand, Opposition has targeted the Haryana government for failing to protect women while promoting 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign. Congress legislature party leader Kiran Choudhry said, "Is this the real face of 'Beti Bachao' campaign? We have been raising the law and order issues repeatedly. Crimes against women occur at a time when no deterrent is in place. These figures are self-explanatory that law and order has taken a beating in Haryana."
