Ambala superintendent of police (SP) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said, "Both accused shooters are members of Kala Rana of Yamunanagar and Kala Jatheri of Sonepat gangs. They were arrested by Delhi police a few weeks back, which also recovered two weapons from them. During their remand, we will make efforts to recover weapons used in the crime and ascertain more involvements. If the same weapons recovered by Delhi police were used in the Ambala murder case, then they will be transferred as case property."
On January 20, 2022, Mohit Rana of Rajapur village in SAS Nagar district of Punjab and his friend Vishal of Ambala Cantonment were shot indiscriminately in a black colour sedan car by some miscreants who chased them in an SUV near DAV Riverside School on Jagadhri road in Mahesh Nagar area of Ambala Cantonment. Mohit had succumbed to the bullet injuries on the same day on January 20, while Vishal died undergoing treatment four days after at PGIMER, Chandigarh on January 24.
Two days after the murder, the Ambala police had recovered the SUV used in these murders from Pipli in Kurukshetra on January 22.
On the complaint, Subhash Rana, brother of Mohit, a case of double murder was registered against miscreants at Mahesh Nagar police station on January 20.
Ambala superintendent of police (SP) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa had formed a team to crack this case under the leadership of DSP Ambala Cantonment.
Earlier, in connection with this case, the Ambala police made two arrests of gangster Monu Rana alias Shamsher Singh of Thamber village in Ambala district on January 24 for conspiring this murder with gangster Kala Rana and a member of Kala Rana gang, Sugam of Model Colony, Yamunanagar on February 1, for providing SIM card used in this crime for making social media post.
On the same day of the murder, Goldy Brar, an associate of Lawrence Bishnoi gang based in Canada in a Facebook post, had taken the responsibility of murdering Mohit Rana, in connivance with Kala Rana who was reported in Thailand at the time of this murder.
During the investigation, the Ambala police established that gangsters Monu Rana and Kala Rana conspired to murder Mohit Rana as he was a witness against them in the 2014 murder case of Mohammad Mustaq of Bhabat village in Zirakpur. The police said Mohit had taken Rs 12.50 lakh from Monu and Kala to turn hostile in the court and he did the same, but despite that, both were convicted with life imprisonment by the Ambala district court. The gangsters demanded the return of money from Mohit and their dispute erupted.
