MOHALI: Joy seems to no know bounds for Hakim Singh, a resident of Mohali, since he became a proud father at 68. His 60-year-old wife
Jaspal Kaur gave birth to a child on October 23, after 40 years of married life. The sexagenarian delivered a baby boy at a hospital in Ludhiana and was discharged on Thursday. Both are doing well.
"You cannot put in words the joy of becoming a mother at an age when most women are grandmothers," said Kaur.
Hailing from Rampur village, Mohali, the couple tried long to have a child till Kaur reached menopause.
All these years the couple visited several temples, gurdwaras, hospitals, and even babas but to no avail.
"We were not daunted by the odds and a year ago we visited Dr Sumita Sofat in Ludhiana for the first time. The treatment followed for a few months and nine month ago I was told that my wife was pregnant", said a proud Singh.
The couple just yearned for a child and the gender did not matter. "We were missing the joy of being parents despite being happily married. We never prayed for a boy or a girl. We just wanted Wahe Guru's blessings for a child," said Kaur while adding, "Perhaps our prayers were true and God gave me a chance to become a mother when women my age are already grandmothers of two-three children."
Dr Sumita Sofat, who runs an infertility centre where the couple was treated during the pre-pregnancy stage, said Kaur became pregnant using a donor egg. "She became pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Her medical condition and health check-up indicated that she would be able to survive a high-risk pregnancy and finally she delivered a baby boy at DMCH via caesarean section", said Dr Sumita.
