PANCHKULA: A minor fire was reported in the old dumping ground in Sector 23 on Tuesday night. Residents of trans Ghaggar sectors made a video of the fire in the dump yard and shared it on the social media sites to seek attention of the administration and government over the issue.
The residents alleged that despite the orders of the NGT to remove all garbage from both the dumping grounds, the MC has given “false information on paper”, as nothing has happened on the ground.
Residents said with the temperature rising, more fires will be reported in the dump yards, and they will have to now tackle air pollution besides foul smell. Residents demand removal of legacy waste from the dumping ground.
Resident welfare association secretary B R Mehta said, “Residents of trans-Ghaggar sectors are already suffering due to foul smell originating from the illegal dumping ground set up in Jhuriwala. Now these fires will add to our trouble.”
“It seems political arrogance is coming in the way of finding a solution to our issue,” Mehta added.
The MC officials claimed that soon the MRF (material recovery facility) centres will be set up where legacy waste will be processed. “The issue of legacy waste at dumping ground in Sector 23 will be over once MRF centres are set up in Panchkula,” MC commissioner Virender Lather said.
Giving information on garbage collection, the officials said the MC in mid-2022 hired a private firm ‘Pooja Consultations Pvt Ltd’ for garbage collection and segregation.
