CHANDIGARH: Punjab cabinet minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, as well as, his son Anumit Singh ‘Hira’ Sodhi have applied for the Congress ticket from Ferozepur seat. Sodhi represents Guru Harsahai assembly constituency, which falls in Ferozepur.
“Congress can win this seat and I will request the party high command to field me. The final decision will be taken by the central leadership but I will surely apply.
People of that area know me well but the party has to take a decision,” Sodhi had told TOI recently.
Akali leader Sher Singh Ghubaya is the sitting MP from the Lok Sabha constituency and there have been speculations that after his son Davinder’s Ghubaya’s switch to Congress, he too might join in.
Sodhi claims to have grip over around 2.5 lakh Rai Sikh community members in the constituency, which was classified under Scheduled Caste (SC) category in 2003 during the Capt
Amarinder Singh’s previous government.
To break into Akali citadel, the Congress in 2014 Lok Sabha elections had fielded its prominent leader Sunil Jakhar from the seat — from where his father Balram Jakhar was elected in 1980 — but remained unsuccessful against SAD’s Ghubaya who was elected Ferozepur MP for the second time consecutively.
In addition, national secretary of Youth Congress Gurbhej Tibbi; former cabinet minister Hans Raj Jossan; son of former Muktsar MLA Harinderpal Singh Kuku, Rahul Singh Sidhu; Chamkaur Singh Dhindsa; former Ferozepur district Congress president Anish Sidana; and Youth Congress secretary Jagdip Goldi Kamboj have also applied for the ticket.
